With two victories, one draw and no losses from their first three games, the Tshwane University of Technology heads as log leaders into round four of the 2022 FNB Varsity Football tournament.
Bushy Moloi’s team has undoubtedly had a great start and will look to reclaim their crown from 2016 and 2018.
We chose to chat with TUT Captain Tebogo Lekaba this week, who stressed that everyone is pleased with the team’s results and thinks they may unseat the reigning champions UJ.
“I think we have shown that this year we are ready to fight for the title and ensure that TUT remains one of the most successful teams in the history of FNB Varsity Football,” Lekaba told Varsity Football.
Lekaba also emphasized that the team is in a good position and only needs to make sure they maintain equilibrium when playing their next opponents.
“Finding the right balance in a team is difficult because we all have different playing styles and personal qualities,” the 24-year-old added.
“Nonetheless, I’m proud to be the team’s captain and I hope that through our performances, we will demonstrate to everyone that we are ready to compete at the highest level.
“The technical staff and our fans are always behind us, so it is important to show them that we appreciate them by playing in a way that will draw crowds to the stadium.”
In the 2022 Varsity Football edition, the Red Army are the only team without a defeat after three games played and Lekaba noted that their near-perfect start has boosted their confidence.
“Being undefeated after three games makes me delighted since we have faced tough opponents that are capable of winning the 2022 Varsity Football championship. We are under pressure, but in a good way, because we firmly think that, with seven points, two victories, one tie and no losses, we are one of the favourites to be named the 2022 Varsity Football winners,” concluded the captain.
TUT face the Educated Footballers from Wits University at 18:30 at TUT Stadium on Thursday.
