UP-Tuks opened their 2016 Varsity Football season with a 1-1 draw against defending champions UWC in Cape Town this past Monday. Led by their experienced captain Simbongile Njokwe the University of Pretoria fielded a team with several new faces including Sabelo Tsambo.
The left winger, who is in his second year of his BA International Relations and Political Science degree, has been a keen footballer since he was a young boy and is relishing the opportunity to represent his university in the Varsity Football competition.
“Playing in my first match for Tuks was really special. Varsity Football is a great competition which allows students to play in a semi-professional environment,” the 21 year old said.
“Then there is the fact that many of the matches are televised which gives the players exposure to the South African sport fraternity. I definitely plan to use my Varsity Football experience to open doors for me in terms of professional football,” he added.
Tsambo, who has dreams of playing for Orlando Pirates or maybe even Chelsea, believes that his enjoyment of his first Varsity Football match had a lot to do with how accommodating the senior UP-Tuks players were to the newcomers.
“The senior players have been great. They have taken us under their wings and helped us to settle in,” Tsambo told varsitysportssa.com.
UP-Tuks take on TUT on Monday, 25 July 2016 at the Tuks Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 CAT and will be televised live on Super Sport 204/210.
