The University of Pretoria bounced back from their home defeat to TUT with a resounding 3-0 away win against the University of Johannesburg in Round Three of Varsity Football.
Goals by FNB Man of the Match Tiago da Serra, Mogau Khwinana and Mbongeni Masilela saw UP-Tuks claim their first win of the 2016 competition and captain Simbongile Njokwe believes that their win is all thanks to a tweaking of their attacking approach. But they will need to change their approach once again when they face NWU-Mafikeng.
“I think the biggest difference between the first two games and our match against UJ is the way we attacked. Against UJ we flooded the box with attackers which paid dividends as we managed to score three times. We ticked all the right boxes,” said the third-year BSc Sport Science student.
“NWU-Mafikeng is a different team which means we will reassess our approach. All teams in Varsity Football deserve respect. There is no resting on our laurels,” he added.
Njokwe paid tribute to the new players in the UP-Tuks squad for the effort and energy that they are contributing to the team.
“The new guys are really adding something special to the squad. Their hunger and willingness to succeed has a domino effect on the entire team,” Njokwe told varsitysportssa.com.
UP-Tuks return home to face NWU-Mafikeng in Round Four of Varsity Football on Monday, 8 August at the Tuks Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 18:30 CAT and the match will not be televised.
