UP-Tuks were the only 7s side to end the opening day of the Varsity Sevens in a windswept Camps Bay unbeaten.
The Pretoria side notched victories over Limpopo, Kovsies, UJ and NWU-Pukke to end the day at the top of the log, although the final round will only be completed on Saturday morning due to some extreme wind.
Defending champions Maties ended the day in second position on the standings with their match against local rivals UCT moved to Saturday morning.
Maties’ only defeat came at the hands of NWU-Pukke who clinched a dramatic victory in the dying stages of the match with a try from skipper Dean Heymans.
Pukke’s only defeat was against the peerless Tuks outfit, who showed that they will take some beating when action resumes early on Saturday morning.
UJ and Kovsies were the only two sides to play a full set of fixtures on Friday, and the Johannesburg side currently occupy third place on the log, with their only defeat coming against Tuks.
Kovsies won three of their five matches to end the day in fifth position, just ahead of Cape sides UCT and UWC who each won two of their five games.
It was a tough start for Limpopo and NMMU, who failed to register a single victory on a disappointing opening day, whilst TUT sit just ahead of them with just the single victory over Limpopo to show for their efforts.
Varsity Beach Volleyball
In the Varsity Beach Volleyball action on Friday defending champions UWC continued their unbeaten run in the tournament, easily dealing with all of their opponents.
They are followed by last year’s runners up UJ who bounced back from an opening defeat to UP-Tuks to win their next two games.
Tuks are level on points with both UJ and NMMU after notching two wins of their own, but their inferior points difference saw them end the day in fourth place.
TUT and UCT both managed just one win each, but UCT played just three matches and will be hoping to make up some ground when action resumes at 9.30 on Saturday morning.
