22-year-old UP-Tuks PSL Striker Lucky Mathosi has started his debut in the Varsity Football Cup with a bang.
This tall striker sets fire to UP-Tuks’ attack and puts an immense amount of pressure on the opposition defence.
Mathosi attended trials at The University of Pretoria in order to pursue a professional career. The then 21-year-old managed to sign his very first professional contract with AmaTuks. Over and above that, he has also managed to further his studies with the institution and is currently a first year Sport Science student.
For most people, it’s difficult to manage a full time job and being a student. However, this youngster manages to balance his studies, Varsity Football and his career as a professional footballer.
“It’s quite difficult most times because my classes clash with my training times. I find it hard to attend classes, so I have to self-study most of my work but overall I am coping,” he said.
Mathosi stated that Varsity Football is an excellent platform for young players to showcase their talent to the country.
“It’s a very interesting tournament with extremely passionate supporters which makes it even more interesting and it’s fairly competitive. I think it’s a great platform for young players to show the country what they can do as well as allowing them to grow,” he stated.
The humble striker has managed to score a goal in every game and walked away with an award after every game. He walked away with the Samsung Super Striker award after their first game against Kovsies as well as receiving the FNB Man of the Match award after an outstanding performance against UCT.
“It is a great feeling receiving man of the match because it shows that I am doing something right. Receiving an award like that boosts my confidence. It will assist me as I am working toward having a better PSL season this year,” he said.
Mathosi does not only place his family as an important aspect of his life but he looks to them for motivation as he views them as being his role models.
“My father lives, speaks and loves the beautiful game. He has always urged me to push harder because he wanted to see me in PSL and that has always been my greatest motivation. My mother would give her last cent for my football stuff, so that is what has driven me to succeed. It’s so that I can make them proud,” he expressed.
This athlete is pushing himself to be the best he can be, not only for himself or his parents, but also for his team mates and institution.
Keep your eyes peeled and watch how far he will go in his career.
