The Tuks Camerata, currently performing in Varsity Sing, sponsored by FNB, on kykNET, is one of 24 choirs in the world selected to perform at the biggest international conference for choirs, the World Choral Symposium.
Taking place in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2017, this conference is held every three years and hosted by the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM). Only 24 choirs across the globe have the honour of being invited to sing at the WCS, presented to thousands of conductors, composers, singers, and choral music lovers. Next year, Tuks Camerata will represent the University of Pretoria, South African as well as the entire African continent. As part of the tour, they will also compete in the European Choir Games to be held in Riga, where they will defend their title of World Champions.
The choir will be performing for a spot in the semi-finals this coming Thursday, on kykNET (DSTV channel 144) at 20h30 against the University of Johannesburg and the University of Limpopo. Only two of these choirs will advance to the semi-final competition which will be broadcast on kykNET on 15 and 29 September. Stellenbosch University, the University of the Western Cape, Nelson Mandela University and Rhodes University Chamber choirs have all advanced through to the semi-finals which will be broadcast on kykNET on 29 September and 6 October. Only two choirs per semi-final will advance to the final.
