UP-Tuks, Maties and UCT were the only unbeaten sides remaining after the second round of Varsity Sevens action in Camps Bay.
Tuks were pushed all the way in their clash with Gauteng rivals UJ, but eventually did enough to take a tense 20-17 victory.
Tries from Rudolph Smith, Jermaine Kleinsmith, Marcel Steyn-Scholtz and Jacques Rossouw saw the Pretoria side claim a vital bonus-point victory, although they were unable to land a single conversion.
Pukke bounced back from their opening defeat to Tuks by seeing off the NMMU Madibaz who are still looking for their first win in Camps Bay.
A try in the powerplay from Dean Heymans saw Pukke take a bonus point from the game, as the Potchefstroom side proved to strong for NMMU who could only manage two tries of their own.
Defending champions Maties continued their winning ways as they saw off last years’ runners up Kovsies in what was ultimately a comfortable 24-7 win.
Kovsies scored their only try through AJ Koertzen, but they were no match for Maties who took a full haul of five log points after another dominant display.
Cape outfits UWC and UCT also registered handsome victories, as they easily saw off the challenges of Limpopo and TUT respectively.
The Ikeys ran in seven tries against Limpopo, with Phil Jacobs and Nick Mills both getting doubles, leaving the northerners without a single point after their first two games.
UWC were even more ruthless in their clash with TUT, as they put the Pretoria side to the sword in a 55-0 rout.
The Bellville team scored eight tries in total with Freddie Muller crossing the tryline twice, and once in the powerplay, to cap a dominant display.
Varsity Sevens results:
Pukke 27-14 NMMU
Tuks 20-17 UJ
Maties 24-7 Kovsies
