It’s about that time of the year once again: the sixth edition of Varsity Football is set to kick off on Thursday and if last season is anything to go by, it is set to be one that is jam-packed with action and impressive displays of football.
Bragging rights!
The current champions of the men’s tournament for football are Tuks and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) are the reigning women’s football champs.
The contenders
The Varsity Football tournament consists of eight teams from different participating universities, namely: Tuks, UJ, UKZN, UWC, UL, Wits and NWU – all of which are going to play in their first fixture of the season on Thursday, 26 July. Two of these are new to the competition this year – UKZN and UL.
TV action
Two fixtures are going to be broadcast live on TV every Thursday night, on SuperSport channel Select (channel 210). The first of these will be the match between NWU and UWC, which will be played at 16:00. Following that, is the mouth-watering encounter between the current champions Tuks, and TUT, airing at 18:15.

Since Tuks have already won the competition three times, all eyes will be on them as their quest to retain the title gets underway on Thursday evening.
It’s going to be nothing short of entertaining as the 10-week journey begins.
