There have been an astounding 80 goals scored in Varsity Football, and you have the chance to vote for your favourite in the Samsung Superstrike competition.
The inaugural Varsity Football competition has been marked by a torrent of goals, with not one of the 28 matches leading up to the final ending up in a 0-0 draw.
However, there are a few goals that will live longer in the memory than others, with some stunning strikes that have taken our breath away, and you have the chance to vote for your favourite on the Varsity Sports Facebook page.
The first goal up for consideration came in the opening match of the competition when NWU midfielder Sylvester Moses unleashed a trademark long range effort against Wits to light the tournament up.
It was not Moses’ last goal from outside the box, but it certainly announced him as a threat as his scorching shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance before hitting the back of the net.
The second strike was as spectacular as it was important. With time running out in NMMU’s league clash against TUT in Pretoria Madibaz defender Niven Kops produced a stunning overhead kick to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw.
That goal with the last kick of the match saw NMMU maintain their unbeaten status which they have kept right up to the final, and also showed that there is more to Kops than just his defensive capabilities.
The final goal came from the boot of NWU ‘supersub’ Ryan van der Westhuizen who put the finishing touch on his team’s 6-1 demolition of UFS with a powerful shot that flew off his left boot and into the top right corner of the goal.
In a strike that brought back memories of Siphiwe Tshabalala’s goal against Mexico in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, Van der Westhuizen gave the Kovsies keeper absolutely no chance.
Here are all three goals:
The final decision on which goal is announced as Samsung Superstrike will be determined by a split vote with fans voting on the Varsity Sports website and Facebook page making up 40% of the vote, the input of the coaches counting for 30% and the Varsity Sports MANCO the other 30%.
