UWC defeated Uni Zulu 3-1 in the second round of Varsity Women’s Football in Potchefstroom on Friday morning.
UWC got off to a strong start, testing Uni Zulu’s defence on the right wing. But the East Coast dwellers were able to hold them at bay.
UWC’s pressure eventually paid off with Khanyisa Manengele’s shot squeezing past the goal keeper just before half time. The Cape Town side went into the second half 1-0 up.
A stern halftime chat from the Uni Zulu coach roused the troops with star midfielder Mbaliyethu Mhlongo scoring her team’s first goal of the game.
The stalemate didn’t last long though with UWC wing back Lauren Jonathan firing a shot from 20 metres out to score.
UWC secured their win with a goal from Sisanda Vukaphi.
