UJ’s 800m star Monique Stander has got her sights firmly set on breaking the two minute barrier this season.
The UJ flyer was far too strong for the rest of the field in the first Varsity Athletics meeting of the year in Port Elizabeth last week, finishing in a blistering time of 2.05 minutes.
That was a full eight second clear of second place, which was particularly satisfying for Stander considering she broke her leg last year whilst in Matric.
“I’m really satisfied with my time and i’m glad to see my times come down after an injury in 2013,” she said.
However, Stander is convinced that she can run even faster, and admitted that her target is the two minute mark which would put her in the running for a medal at the World Junior Championships.
“I’m really trying my best to run under 2min as this will most definitely be a medal chance for me at World Junior Championships later this year,” she said.
The UJ ace will be competing in the SA Junior, SA Senior and USSA Championships on top of the three remaining Varsity Athletics events to give herself the best chance of reaching her goal.
“Yes, I’ll be competing in all the meets; the more races, the better. I would really like to run sub 2min at World Junior Champs (End of July),” she explained.
