Vaal University of Technology (VUT) midfield workhorse Charles Sikhosana says they are aiming for a top-four finish and admits he’s become incredibly inspired by the 12 Varsity Football success stories within the triumphant Women’s Africa Cup of Nations squad in Banyana Banyana.
Sikhosana, a 2nd year Sports Management student at the institution is once again pitted at the forefront of the potential success of the squad as he sets the tempo and energy of his troops as a midfield enforcer and at times a box-to-box midfielder.
Strong in the tackle, blessed with an incredible passing range and engine, he starred in their 3-1 win over UKZN last week which has seen the squad in high spirits going into their next round of fixtures.
“I would like to take the opportunity to first thank the people who make sure the tournament is a success and welcome our twelfth man, which is our supporters, who I promise nothing but entertainment and good football,” he said.
“As for us VUT, we started this tournament on a positive result by defeating UKZN 3-1 and our ambitions this season is to focus on a top-four finish and probably going all the way and winning the tournament.
“But we won’t put ourselves under unnecessary pressure, we’re going to focus and take it one game at a time.
‘Shoes’ as he’s affectionately known went on to laud the impact of the tournament on the international stage as 12 players, past and present featured in the Banyana squad as they beat hosts Morocco 2-1 to be crowned African champions.
“This tournament has gained massive recognition since its first edition due to the positive impact it’s had on football locally and on the international stage.
“With the most recent success story so evident on the Women’s AFCON tournament, I’m more than inspired as a player who’s featuring in this edition of the Varsity Football showpiece given the success stories coming out of this very same tournament.
“If at least 12 players that played in the Varsity Cup can feature in a squad that ends up being crowned continental champions means that’s a great impact and a positive one of note – that this tournament is contributing to our football as a country.”
VUT will be aiming to make it two wins from two when they face Tshwane University if Technology at the TUT Stadium on Thursday at 18h00.
