The second leg of the Varsity Sports Sevens got underway in difficult conditions at the Douglas Mitchell sportsground in Margate on Friday.
The NMMU Madibaz got their campaign off to a convincing start when they put TUT to the sword, recording a 45-7 victory in the opening game.
The second clash of the day was far more evenly-matched as UJ were forced to work hard for their gritty 12-10 win against UCT.
Limpopo finished the Plettenberg Bay tournament at the bottom of the standings, and things did not get any eaiser for them in their opening fixture at the Douglas Mitchell sportsground as UP-Tuks cruised to a 48-0 victory.
Last week’s Plate champions Kovsies are determined to challenge for the Cup this week, and they got off to the perfect start with a 19-10 win against the dangerous UWC.
Plett champions Maties got their title defence off to a convincing start, racking up massive victories in both of their first two games.
The team from Stellenbosch dominated TUT in their first game to win 57-0, and then followed that up with a 36-0 victory over NMMU to underline their status as favourites.
Last week’s runners-up NWU-Pukke racked up the tries in their first game against Limpopo which they won 59-0, but the clash which followed between Kovsies and UP-Tuks saw the two sides cancel each other out in a remarkable 0-0 draw.
Pukke continued their promising form with a hard-fought 12-0 victory over UP-Tuks, but they came unstuck later in the day when they went down to a fired-up Kovsies side who beat them 12-0.
UJ were pushed all the way by the Madibaz but managed to hold on for a narrow victory before setting their sights on Maties who beat them in the USSA final in George earlier this week.
Although the match could have gone either way it was Maties who produced the late magic to continue their unbeaten run, with UJ left to consider what might have been.
