Following a brief weather delay the Varsity Sports Sevens is set for an action-packed conclusion in Plettenberg Bay.
There was some fierce competition in both the Cup and the Plate competitions on Saturday morning, with Maties emerging as the front-runners in the Cup with an evenly-matched pack of teams snapping at their heels.
In the Plate the Kovsies and Ikeys are set on a collision course for the Final, which will feature a dress rehearsal as the teams meet each other iin the next round robin fixture as well.
The match of the day saw the NMMU Madibaz produce an inspired performance to draw 22-22 with UP-Tuks to end the Pretoria side’s winning streak.
However, there were no such issues for Maties who worked hard for a 45-24 victory over UJ before coming back later to brush off UWC, who went down 47-0 to the Stellenbosch juggernaut.
NWU-Pukke also started the day with a confidence-boosting 31-5 victory over UWC, but they came up just short in their brutal clash with UP-Tuks which they lost 14-12.
UWC failed to deliver on the promise they showed on Friday, and will have taken some valuable lessons about what it takes to compete with the top sides ahead of the Margate tournament next week.
The results leave Maties in pole position given their flawless record thus far, with UP-Tuks just behind them and the unpredictable Madibaz firmly installed as the dark horses in the competition before the weather intervened.
Both Plate matches played on Saturday saw heavily one-sided victories. Limpopo’s woes continued as they were shut out again by 55-0 drubbing from the Ikeys, and Kovsies showed that they are serious contenders for the Plate with a 50-0 victory over TUT.
