Varsity 7s and Varsity Beach Volleyball kicks off today in Durban. Here are seven things you simply have to know ahead of the competition.
It’s happening in Durban
The very first Varsity Sports competitions to take place were Varsity 7s and Varsity Beach Volleyball. In 2012, the humble beginnings of Varsity Sports began with these two sports taking place in Camps Bay, Cape Town. Soon thereafter the venue moved to Villager Rugby Club, where the tournaments took place right up until 2016. In 2017, however, to really hammer home the #LetsParty theme, there was only one option for the competition venue – Durban in December, during the Rage festival.
You stand to win big
If there’s one thing Varsity Sports is well aware of, it’s their target market. And if there’s one thing students love, it’s a freebie. In typical Varsity Sports fashion, those attending will do well to leave empty handed. As if the tickets weren’t cheap enough, entrance also guarantees you a shot at winning one of the multiple prizes on offer. From free towels and flip flops, to building giant Steers burgers in order to win VIP prizes or Steers rib burgers – there is something for everyone.
Cashless card system
We’re probably preaching to the converted here, but cash is a thing of the past. Needless to say, Varsity 7s and Varsity Beach Volleyball will make use of a cashless cards system called Howler. Easier than a multiple choice exam paper.
The champions
If somehow you missed the 2016 season – it’s worth noting that the defending champions are Maties for Varsity 7s and UWC for Varsity Beach Volleyball. With both events moving away from Cape Town, teams will be relishing the opportunity to snatch away both titles from the Cape.
5FM
For those living under a rock – Varsity Sports an 5FM have partnered in 2017. Like Khanye and Kim, two powerhouses have combined to become a fierce force – in this scenario, a party powerhouse. 5FM will bring the best entertainment SA has to offer, while Varsity Sports offers Sportainment like you’ve never seen before. A match made in heaven.
Gruelling tournaments
It’s not all fun and games. At least not for the participants. Varsity 7s is the most gruelling sevens competition in SA and possibly the world, with 11 matches being played over three days. Varsity Beach Volleyball crowns a champion in 36 hours over more than six matches per team.
Rage on
The venue says it all. Varsity 7s and Varsity Beach Volleyball just had to move to Durban. When it comes to parties in December, there was no competition. Durban was unrivalled. It was a no-brainer.
So come on down, show your support and above all, #LetsParty
