Both Varsity Football semifinals will be held in Pretoria next week after an action-packed final round of league action on Monday night.
TUT’s 3-0 victory over Wits saw them finish at the top of the log with five wins and two draws in their seven games to end with 17 log points.
UP-Tuks’ dramatic 1-0 victory over NWU in Mafikeng saw them leapfrog their rivals into second place to set up a big rematch in the semifinal next week.
NMMU’s draw with UFS in Port Elizabeth saw them finish level with NWU on log points and goal difference, which meant that they had to eventually be separated by the number of cards they received during the tournament.
Log positions are determined first by log points, secondly by goal difference, thirdly by goals for, fourthly by the head-to-head result and finally by cards.
Both NWU and NMMU finished on 13 log points, with a goal difference of nine and scored fifteen goals each in the competition, whilst their clash in Round Four ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
This meant that the number of cards each team received decided which team finished third, with NWU’s superior disciplinary record setting up their rematch with UP-Tuks whilst NMMU will face TUT who they drew with last week.
The semifinals will also see the top women’s University sides do battle in their own knock-out matches which will be played as curtain-raiser prior to kick-off.
At Tuks the home side will take on UJ and at TUT it will be the hosts facing University of Limpopo for the right to play in the women’s final the following week.
