Nine goals were scored in the past round as fans enjoyed a feast of football across the country. We are coming off the back of a winter week so cold it would have Jon Snow shivering. While it was cold outside on the football pitch, the action was hotter than ever before. The fifth year edition of Varsity Football is indeed a spectacle. We are slowly reaching the business end of the round robin stage and we are edging closer to finding out which four teams will make the cut for the semi-finals. Games are getting closer and closer and it’s becoming tougher to predict the scores.
NWU vs CUT
UWC tore the Mafikeng based outfit to shreds in the Mother City last week. Any team that ends up on the back of a 4-0 drubbing must have had a nightmare of a game and the same goes for NWU. But they have an opportunity to bounce back to their winning ways. At home in the North West, NWU can be lethal and they have intimidating fans, who create an electrifying atmosphere. But in CUT they face a tricky opposition. On their day they can beat anyone. But they face a daunting task as most teams return from the North West empty handed and it won’t be any different for the men from Bloem.
Prediction: NWU 2 CUT 1
UJ vs UFH
After putting their cross town rivals Wits to the sword, UJ are going into this game high on confidence. They seem to have finally found their top gear. The good news is that they are playing against a team that is often targeted for easy points. UFH have nothing to offer and their poor form this season suggests that they’re in for another big hiding. They didn’t play against Tuks last week and they took a break from picking the ball from the back of their net on numerous occasions. But they will be subjected to yet another big defeat.
Prediction: UJ 4 UFH 1
Watch – UJ back to winning ways:
Tuks vs Wits
Last week Wits were brought back down to earth. They won their first match of the season, upsetting CUT 2-0, but their next match ended in a 4-1 defeat at home. Tuks are yet to win a match and simply have to win this encounter if they are to have a shot at reaching the semi-finals. Typically they tend to step it up when needed most and start a late run of victories en route to a semi-final. This could be the beginning of such a spell.
Prediction: Tuks 3-1 Wits
TUT vs UWC
Who will stop them? This is the question that everyone is asking. Can they even be stopped? That remains to be seen. TUT is on a roll and they are getting results and it matters little where they play. UWC are bad travellers and they will not be a match at home to TUT. In Cape Town UWC are a different kettle of fish but on the road they are a struggling team and cannot even afford to collect a point. It will be hard for them to contain TUT given the form that they are in at the moment. In this form TUT should walk it and register yet another easy win. It is going to be a walk in the park for the Tshwane outfit.
Prediction: TUT 3 UWC 0
