Maties capitalised on the momentum of their victory in the inaugural Varsity Sports Sevens last week to take the USSA Sevens title in George on Tuesday.
The team from Stellenbosch defeated UJ 36-26 in the final to add another trophy to their collection ahead of the second leg of the Varsity Sports Sevens in Margate this weekend.
The reigning champions squared off with old rivals UP-Tuks in the semifinal after easily brushing aside UWC in their quarterfinal earlier in the day.
UJ qualified for the final by beating TUT in their quarterfinal and then taking care of Kovsies in the semifinal.
However, the Maroon Machine was in full flow once again and they claimed yet more silverware with the impressive Josh Bassingthwaite named the player of the tournament.
The biggest upset of the day came when NWU-Pukke, who only lost the Varsity Sports final in Plettenberg Bay to Maties in extra time, were knocked out by Varsity Sports Plate winners Kovsies in the quarterfinal.
Although they lost their semifinal against UJ, Kovsies showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with in Margate by beating UP-Tuks in the Bronze play-off to claim third place.
The action at the NMMU George campus provided the perfect tune-up for the Varsity Sports showdown in Margate this weekend, where the rest of the teams will be desperate to knock Maties off their perch as they aim for a clean sweep.
