UWC and Tuks were undefeated on Day Two as they booked their top four finish along with Maties and Pukke.
UJ vs UCT
The University of Johannesburg proved too strong for the University of Cape Town when they beat UCT 24-15 on their final clash of the day. Ronald Brown was pivotal in UJ’s challenge, scoring two great tries with the first of them being in the Powerplay.
UJ held a 17-5 lead at the break, with UCT trying their best to come back in the second half, although they scored two tries in the final half.
Maties vs Kovsies
Maties played their best game of Day Two against the University of Free State, Kovies, and putting 50 points on the board, with Kovsies only getting 10. Kovsies started the better of the two teams as they took an early 10-0 lead but that is where their success stopped for the match.
Maties led 12-10 at the break but scored two Powerplay tries in the second half. Brandon Asher-Wood scored on Kovsies’ Powerplay, with Angus van Niekerk scoring in his side’s one. Both Asher-Wood and Van Niekerk scored two tries in the match as Maties qualified for the Cup semi-finals.
Pukke vs WSU
The NWU Pukke claimed top spot of the Varsity 7s standings after they saw off the Walter Sisulu University in their final game of the day. Three first half tries got Pukke of the strong start, with the last one coming inside their Powerplay as they led 22-5 at half time.
The second half finished 0-0 as both sides failed to score any points with Pukke hanging on for the 22-5 win.
Tuks vs UFH
The UP Tuks ran riot in the final match of the day as they thumped the University of Fort Hare 43-0 with Luke van der Smit scoring four tries in the match. Van der Smit ran in two tries in each half as Tuks booked their spot in the semi-finals for tomorrow.
Keano Langeveldt also starred for Tuks with two tries of his own.
UWC vs Madibaz
UWC booked their place in the Cup semi-finals of the Varsity 7s after they saw off a spirited Madibaz side 14-12 in the final game of day two. Clinton Herbst and Rohaan Adams scored for UWC, while Helin Pietersen and Luan Niewoudt scored for the side from PE.
Niewoudt’s try was in stoppage time and they had the conversion to draw the game but unfortunately for them it wasn’t successful as UWC finished day two undefeated.
