NWU-Pukke bowled UCT out for 84 to beat the Cape side by 40 runs in their Varsity Cricket clash on Wednesday.
It was a low-scoring affair at Senwes Park, and despite being put under some pressure, they managed to bounce back and end UCT’s hopes.
The hosts got off to the worst possible start as they lost the destructive Wihan Lubbe who walked past a wide from UCT skipper Seb Golding and was stumped off the first ball of the match.
Despite that blow the first over still went for 14 runs, and Andre Malan was able to get hold of a few more before he followed Edrich Lubbe to the changerooms, leaving NWU-Pukke on 61/3 at the halfway stage of the innings.
UCT bowled with discipline and managed to cut off boundary opportunities, and their fielding put the home side under even more pressure as Kagiso Rapulana was run out in the 11th over.
NWU-Pukke skipper Rohan Kruger was left with the rescue job, but he fell to Luke Stevens for 26, leaving them at 83/5 with just five overs left.
Henning du Plooy managed to find the boundary a few times to take his side to three figures, and he would end unbeaten on 37 as NWU-Pukke scrambled to a total of 124.
The response from UCT never got going, with Alex Whitelaw falling LBW to the first ball he faced from Bjorn Fortuin.
Jovaun van Wyngaardt then set about the UCT line-up, picking up four wickets to destroy any hope they had of chasing the total down.
James Strang and Jordan Leppan put together some late resistance for the visitors, but the game was beyond them and their challenge fizzled out.
