NWU-Pukke got their Varsity Netball campaign off to the ideal start when they beat their old rivals Kovsies 60-47 in Pretoria.
USSA champions Kovsies had to do with a number of their stars who are away playing for SA Netball and the NWU students were ready to exploit any weakness top produce a first upset!
The Potchefstroom outfit made a solid start to the match and established a 16-8 advantage over Kovsies at the end of the first quarter.
By half-time they had built up a healthy 36-18 lead as the Bloemfontein side fell off the pace.
Kovsies fought back well in the second half and managed to cut the lead down, but it was not enough to overhaul Pukke who bagged a full three log points for the win.
Pukke’s Zandre Kruger walked away with the FNB Player of the Match award.
Things do not get any easier for Kovsies who face hosts Tuks on Saturday, whilst Pukke are up against TUT.
