NWU-Pukke snatched a late 3-2 victory over hosts Kovsies in a thrilling encounter in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
The win sees Pukke protect their unbeaten record in Varsity Hockey, following on from their victorious performance in the first leg in Potchefstroom.
The visitors drew first blood when a shot deflected off a Kovsies defender and found the net to make it 1-0.
Kovsies hit back with a goal of their own when after some brilliant work by Cornelle Botha, the ball was deflected in by Madie Wessels to draw things level at 1-1 and please the crowd.
However, Pukke got the lead back when they managed to catch the home team’s defence napping and Carli Gericke was on hand to slot the goal.
Kovsies levelled things up once again through the prolific Izelle Lategan who buried the opportunity in the second chukka to set up an exciting finish.
The end-to-end action continued as both teams had chances to secure the decisive goal. Pukke had a good opportunity from a penalty corner, but Kovsies were counter-attacking well as the match hung in the balance.
The game ended in dramatic fashion when Pukke were awarded a penalty corner with just two minutes left, and it was Carissa Vorster who stepped up and slotted the goal to hand her side a tough win in front of the Kovsies crowd.
