It’s an open chase for the bottom four positions on the Varsity Football log, and Wits’ pride is on the line to finish fifth.
Following their 4-1 thumping at the hands of NMMU, the Wits outfit has vowed once again to bring home the points, or die trying.
Captain Muzimkhulu Nhlengathwa says the Wits outfit has taken a number of things from the loss.
“They were better than us and an organised side, it was a good experience playing them,” he said.
Despite trailing 2-0 Wits refused to give in and their fighting spirit was rewarded when Tshepo Motsukunyane capitalised on a defensive error from NMMU.
Nhlengathwa said that goals like Motsukunyanes, which have been rare for Wits, have been inspirational.
“We need to play together more as a unit. Our communication on the field of play needs to be more effective. We have learnt that we need to be more threatening on the field.”
At the best, Wits can only finish as high as 5th place with only two more games to play, and Nhlengathwa says they have targeted their upcoming match against UFS, who are one point above them on the log.
“UFS are a side like us. They have also been struggling to score. And we’re going to do everything we can to exploit their weaknesses in the backline,” said Nhlengathwa
The captain identified the first 15 minutes of the game as the key.
“We tend to concede early. Our concentration needs to be on from the starting whistle.”
Wits have spent the majority of the tournament, bar their last minute win over UCT, clawing their way back from conceding early on, and things might prove even more difficult from the back with threats that stalwart defender Nelson Mwale could be side-lined due to injury.
The captain has challenged Wits fans to pull out all the stops for their last home game of the tournament. Their never-say-die attitude is going to have to be upped even more if Wits wants to grab the points.
Having netted just two goals in the tournament the Wits strike force, for pride or glory, needs to pull something out of the hat.
