Born and bred in the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare, Charles Hanyani’s coaching career started at the tender age of 19. His first great achievement was taking the school team to regional championships, at national level. His legacy was short-lived, as he chose to follow the academic footsteps of his president, Mr Robert Mugabe. He started his studies at University of Fort Hare, doing his BSc in Agriculture in Animal Science, and he furthered his education by completing an MSc in Agriculture and Animal Sciences.
Despite his limited experience in coaching, he was approached by the sports department to take over the coaching role for the university football team. So setting the bar high, he set out in his quest for great levels.
“It’s a career threat that one takes, having a masters in animal science, and not having experience, is career suicide, but it was a chance I was willing to take for the passion I have,” said Hanyani.
Head coach of the University of Fort Hare football team, Hanyani is an over-educated coach. Barely 30-years-old, his academic football achievements cannot go unnoticed. He has already achieved:
– SAFA/CAF C License
– Football periodization specialist (World Football Academy)
– FIFA/CIES Certificate in Sports Management
“My playing days did not have major outcomes, I played football like many African kids, but that did not stop or limit my ability to empower myself with the science of the game. While job hunting I knew my true passion was football, animal science was my career,” he said.
After being offered a job as a lecturer, his quest to greatness began, but his time with the team was limited. But sacrifice was the norm for Hanyani. The man is a true and living testament to patriotism – he has served the institution as an academic and know he is leading the UFH football team to what is currently the best and most honourable tournament to take part in, as a university student.
Hanyani has achieved:
– SAFA Amatole regional playoff in 2014
– SAFA Amatole regional winners in 2014
– USSA football Eastern Province winners in 2013
“Varsity Football has to be the highlight of my career so far,” said the young cpach. “At my age I would like to think that I have served my university well. In a historic year for our institution, I have secured us a spot in Varsity Football, and for me that on its own has opened up opportunities for my players to grow academically and sporting wise.”
Hanyani is unique in all senses. His academic record superb. His will to empower himself with additional courses, to increase his knowledge about the game will bode well for the future of the next generation.
What a way to serve his institution in all aspects, whether on the field or in the classroom.
