Wits are still searching for their first Varsity Football goal after two rounds, so they are desperate to turn things around against UCT on Monday.
The Johannesburg side failed to take matters into their own hands after losing their second game on the trot to Tuks 2-0.
Their efforts were not enough to bring home their first goal of the tournament, unless you count Nelson Mwale’s unfortunate own-goal.
Wits are willing to put everything on the line, to get more practice time in says captain Muzimkhulu Nhlengethwa. The demands of the tournament have meant they will be spending their Saturday’s studying rather than relaxing at home.
“We are trying to catch up, especially since we have been losing,” said Nhlengethwa.
Wits will be flying down to Cape Town for their match against UCT on Monday.
“I think this match will be closer than the others, UCT were ranked 12th in the USSA tournament last year, and we were fifth so we are planning for a better game,” added the Wits skipper.
Wits are going to need all the fire power they can muster as they desperately need to get on the score sheet. The side has been practicing four times a week to improve their attacking third says Nhlengethwa.
Also the away game is going to be very difficult without the Wits fans behind them.
“They have been amazing. There were quite a few Witsies who came to support us in Pretoria and we were grateful they came with us. It is not the same as a home game but it means a lot to have someone back us,” said Nhlengethwa.
Wits are forming a reputation for hard, fast opening encounters. But too many opportunities went sailing off target. Accuracy in front of goal is still woefully out of hand.
Their continued pressure is a clear indication that the side has been working on their match fitness. Still the likes of Mwale, Marcus Leki and Kgabisi Mohale were called into action to make some last ditch tackles.
The captain says he hopes in the end the sacrifices would have been worth the effort. Can Wits do better on the pitch? Come Monday, the future clever boys will be put to the test.
