UWC goalkeeper Reon October wants to follow in the footsteps of his hero Moeneeb Josephs.
The UWC skipper is a big fan of the Wits goalkeeper Josephs, who won the PSL goalkeeper of the season in the 2014/2015 season. He has been outstanding between the sticks and he has so far emerged as his side’s best player.
October’s heroic performance against Wits in the opening match helped his team to earn a valuable point away from home. That goalless draw instilled confidence and self-belief for the Mother City based outfit.
They are now unbeaten in four matches and it’s all thanks to their influential goalkeeper and his leadership abilities at the back.
October is short but his reflexes and positioning has made him a firm favourite to walk away with this year’s goalkeeper of the year award.
October said: “Don’t judge me with my height. I love goalkeeping and enjoy what I am doing. I work on it every day and I am confident that one day I will play in the Premier Soccer League. Everybody ask me about my height, but I have surprised a lot of people. I don’t have any problem dealing with set-pieces.”
Josephs, who is the regular goalkeeper for Wits, inspires the young goalkeeper to dream.
“I look up to Josephs for inspiration in the PSL. I always watch him and how he organises his defence,” he said.
October does not care about individual honours all he wants to see his team making it to the knockout stages.
“We have been unlucky in most cases and I just want to see this team making it to the last four that is my personal goal. I would rather not win any individual award and the team make it to the semifinals,” he said.
UWC have been part of the competition from the first year, but they are still considered as the underdogs.
“We will surprise a lot of teams this year. We have a good team and have the potential of going far this year,” said October.
