Jersey No.10 in football has always been associated with greatness, creativity, prestige and respect, and with the NWU side it is no different.
Most all-time football greats including Pele and Maradona donned the number for their countries. Currently the same can be said about the likes of Neymar of Brazil and Messi of Argentina.
The first product of the Varsity Football to play for a Professional Soccer League (PSL) team, Thabo “Scara” Mnyamane wore the same number while playing for NWU in the first Varsity Football tournament last year.
Orebotse Mongae hails from Majemantsho in Mafikeng. His teammates assigned him jersey No.10 for this year as they believe that he possesses the necessary skills to re-ignite the winning spirit of the team.
This creative attacking middle fielder is fully aware that wearing the number comes with great responsibility.
“Jersey No.10 comes with great pressure as you are expected to deliver” said Mongae.
This 21-year-old Sports Science student says hard work, discipline, dedication and determination would make him to follow in Mnyamane` s footprints.
“Thabo donned jersey No.10 for NWU before me and he has left a great legacy. That is why I want to compete for all mayor prizes in this competition through the help of my teammates”.
“Bobo” as he is affectionately known scored NWU’s first goal against University of Limpopo and was also named man of the match.
Orebotse is a big fan of Argentina and Barcelona player Lionel Messi who also happen to wear jersey No.10 for his team and country.
When asked about his future plans Mongae said: “I hope to play for a Professional Soccer League team one day but my priority for now is to help NWU team win this competition”.
