Newly-appointed NWU captain Lesego Senokwane talks about his cricketing ambitions and the younger squad in the 2019 tournament
Klerksdorp-born Lesego Senokwane started playing mini cricket aged nine. He then moved to the harder ball and went on to represent the North-West Dragons and the North-West University.
This year has been a new beginning for NWU, who have a much younger squad. Senokwane said, “The energy is different but at the same time there’s a lot of learning that needs to be done, especially because T20 cricket is such a quick game. It’s exciting to have people in the team that want to make an impact.”
With regards to how his leadership and experience can contribute to the team, Senokwane said, “I think because I’ve been around longer than most, because we have such a young squad this year, I can teach them how to handle the pressure of Varsity Cricket and share my experience with them with regards to the power play.”
Senokwane is grateful for the opportunity that Varsity Cricket provides. “It definitely gives players exposure to other provinces around the country because as you can see some of the games are being televised,” he said. “Scouts can pick up players from different regions of the country. It’s been good for cricket as a whole.”
With regards to his own future cricket ambitions, Senokwane says that his plan is to play at the highest level. “It’s a process and you need to take it step by step.”
