After their draw with log-leaders UJ, NWU have set their sights on securing home advantage in the semifinals.
The 1-1 stalemate with UJ saw NWU maintain their unbeaten status and secure a spot in the play-offs, but captain Lebogang Phetlhu is not satisfied and wants a victory in their final league fixture against Kovsies in Bloemfontein next week.
Phetlhu admitted that his sde had been frustrated by a disciplined UJ side, and is looking for them to threaten more on attack when they face Kovsies.
“It was a tough game, we tried were we could but couldn’t score as we had planned. One point for the team isn’t that bad, it’s better than a loss.
“I believe we can win the next game and get to host the semi-finals and hopefully win the tournament,” he said.
NWU coach Amos Xabanisa said that his team could have taken all three points against UJ if they had made better use of their opportunities.
“The game was a close one, if we had used the many chances we had we could have won it. We came in this game hoping that we’ll get a win and knew that UJ is a very competitive team,” he said.
UJ coach Bradley Carnell said that he was happy with the result against a strong NWU aside at their Mafikeng fortress.
“It was a very intense game, there was a lot of expectations coming into this game and I think it didn’t disappoint. Both teams came out with a plan to win, all credit them and we’re happy with the one point.
“We had a plan and implemented it but you can never how what the 90 minutes can give you, and certain things we’re not in control of,” he added.
