Last season The University of North-West travelled to UJ and managed thrash the Joburg side in their own backyard to qualify for the the semi-finals.
The University of Johannesburg failed to maintain their back-to-back winning streak after they were held to a goalless draw by the University of Western Cape on Thursday evening, 30 August 2018. Coach Mandla has maintained his stance about the league and what the team needs.
Here’s how UJ did against UWC
“The match away against NWU is important to the UJ team because NWU is a good team, very strong on the ball and lost against them last season at home. Our main goal is to get three points against NWU to setup a home semi-final and final in front of our home supporters.”
Coach Mandla Zwane has clearly stated that the upcoming match against NWU has nothing to do with revenge but UJ’s pursuit to win their first Varsity Football title. Undoubtedly UJ has come very close to winning the Varsity Football trophy and with the momentum they have, now the odds seem to favour them.
It’s been a tough couple of years for the UJ team, suffering at the hands of their opponents. The element of luck has not existed for the Joburg side but now fate is in their own hands and with the drive and ambition they have, impossible is nothing.
Coach Mandla urges all the UJ fans to come out in their numbers to fully back the boys.
“The UJ team needs their fans more than ever. We’ve seen it countless times in football what influence the fans can bring to the game of football, so I urge everyone part of the Orange army to come and support us,” said Zwane.
Their next match will be played away from home but it will be televised on SuperSport, channel 204/210. You can also follow the game on social media platforms, especially on twitter @varsitydiski.
