NWU are eyeing top spot of the Varsity Sports Football standings as they prepare to face UCT in Mafikeng on Monday.
The North-West Province team are currently second in the standings and are hoping to climb the table by overcoming the Ikey Warriors on Monday.
Coach Amos Xabanisa says it’s every team dream to be on top of the log and he has urged his players to score more goals and try not to concede in their next games.
“We have been working on our attacking and finishing tactics the whole week. Our key strategy going into this game is accuracy and speed,” he said.
Xabanisa feels that they also need to win this upcoming game to reward their loyal fans.
“Our fans have been behind the team all the way .They have been our pillar of strength in the past two home games. We need to reward them with a convincing win,” he added.
NWU are second on the Varsity Sports Football competition log with seven points after three games scoring six goals and conceding four goals.
The Ikey Warriors find themselves tied in bottom place on the tournament log and in the run up to the match, Warrior’s coach Rowan Hendricks spoke about how the team are feeling.
“The boys seem to feel and look fresh. We know that NWU will run at us strong. They’re a good ball-playing team, but we have players and mean to deal with that.”
He continued: “We are going into this match with an optimistic and risky approach, as the players know that I trust them.
“The players have been working really hard and I can only be thankful and stand back as I watch them give their best. This is their tournament to play, to enjoy themselves and to show UCT that they are true Ikey Warriors,” he said.
