NWU coach Amos Xabanisa said that the role of their passionate fans will be vital in their semifinal against defending champions UP-Tuks in Mafikeng.
NWU finished the league phase of the competition unbeaten after drawing 1-1 with Kovsies in Bloemfontein on Monday, and will host the Pretoria side in a replay of their semifinal last year.
This was a third away draw after NWU drew with NMMU in Port Elizabeth and UP-Tuks in Pretoria earlier in the tournament.
Xabanisa said that they learned some valuable lessons in Bloemfontein which will see them raise their game in front of their faithful fans next week as they look to qualify for their first final.
“We are taking lessons from this game against University of Free State as we prepare for our semifinal clash against University of Pretoria at home.
“We need to work on our attack as I was impressed with our defence in this game. We also count on our passionate supporters to be our driving force in our semifinal game at home,” he said.
Xabanisa says he is very impressed about his boys’ performance in their away games in the Varsity Football tournament.
“We have been good travellers since the beginning of this tournament”
Meanwhile the Kovsies coach Godfrey Tenoff was relieved to come away with a draw which saw his side qualify for their first semifinal.
“My team surpassed my expectations. It’s always an honour to play NWU-Mafikeng. We don`t sleep when we have to play them. My team would like to emulate them or better them ultimately,” he said.
