The NMMU team are keen to use the Varsity Athletics meetings to measure themselves against the best that South Africa has to offer.
While the Eastern Cape University are not expecting to finish in the top four, they are hoping to see some serious growth and development through the three meetings in order to build a competitive base.
NMMU Sports Manager for Athletics Nellis Bothma told varsitysportssa: “This will be a great injection for Athletics in the Eastern Cape, we want to measure ourselves against the top teams.
“The challenge for us will be to use this opportunity to develop the athletes and interest in Athletics, which is why it is so exciting that there will be television coverage,” he said.
Bothma expects a few individual NMMU athletes to mix it with the best when action gets underway in Stellenbosch on Monday.
“Ischke Senekal is someone who we are excited about, she should do quite well in the shot put and discus, and we also have Chad Herman who threw the javelin over 74 metres at the SA Under-23 Championships,” he said.
While Senekal and Herman represent their best chances in the field events, there are also a few track athletes who Bothma expects to extend themselves in the coming weeks to put NMMU on the Varsity Athletics map.
