The NMMU women’s hockey side, with a number of provincial and national representatives, are hoping to ruffle a number of feathers during the Varsity Hockey competition.
With eight Eastern Province under-21 representatives as well as two players that are playing hockey at national level, the NMMU side have got the talent to win.
The NMMU Sports Manager, Cheslyn Gie said: “This hockey competition is going to do for hockey what the Varsity Cup has done for rugby – it’s going to give our students a wonderful platform to perform.”
The format of the competition is interesting. There are three 20-minute periods which are broken up by two five-minute long strategy breaks.
“This is roughly based on the European hockey leagues and should be more exciting to watch.
The girls are both excited and nervous. This is the first time in their hockey-playing careers that they will be flown to venues, accommodated and hosted free of charge,” Gie Added.
This competition gives these girls the exposure that they have never been fortunate enough to have and it is such exciting times for women’s hockey in South Africa.
The NMMU side takes on Kovsies in their opening fixture in Potchefstroom on Saturday and then they have a double-header against Pukke and Wits on Sunday.
