Netball South Africa president Mimi Mthethwa believes that the Varsity Netball tournament will provide good platform to develop many good players for the national team.
Mthethwa was a keen spectator during the Varsity Netball game between TUT and UFS Kovsies and later also watched the battle of supremacy between UP-Tuks and NWU-Pukke at Tuks on Sunday.
The NSA president said she was happy with what she saw at Tuks on Sunday but also noted the gap between the tertiary institutions in terms of level of performance on the field of play.
“I haven’t seen the other teams playing but I know what other institutions can offer on the field of play. I was also happy to see TUT playing as was my first time seeing them in action,” said Mthethwa.
She added: “I have see gaps between the tertiary institutions and there is lot to do as Netball South Africa to make sure not only your University of Pretoria, your Potch, your University of Free State that give us good players but other institutions bringing in players to the level required to play for the national team”.
Mthethwa expressed hope that lot of talent will be unearthed during the whole tournament.
‘Always when we have tournaments like this one, as Netball South Africa we see it as platform where development can be enhanced. We believe some good players don’t make it to the teams that play in national champions and an reason agreed to have lot of tournaments happening to widen platform to select players for the national team. We believe that there are lot of players in the country and need to create lot of tournaments for them,” she said.
