The final round-robin series of games of the 2019 season is upon us, with four semi-final spots up for grabs but six teams in the running – resurgent UWC among them.
The team standing in the way of Stanton Smith’s side at 18:30 and a home semi-final back at ‘The Operation Room’ is NWU, currently occupying the number one spot. As a result, both sides will be desperate to secure the win which seals their place for a home semi final – and will rely on their key players making the difference.
In UWC’s case, the 2019 season has seen many youngsters raise their hands with the type of football they have showcased and one of them is Siphosethu Meveni. The 23-year-old has been a revelation for ‘UDubs’ this season, collecting two Man Of the Match awards (against CUT and UKZN).
In a chat with varsityssportsa.com, Meveni was determined to continue his fine form in the Round 7 clash against NWU and, hopefully, beyond.
“I am going to give hundred percent in this game because we need the win. I am going to do what I always in every game I play and there is no pressure in this upcoming match,” says the Centane-born attacker.
For obvious reasons, considering the advantage of a home semi-final and UWC’s form at their home ground, Thursday’s game is a must win. Also, the last time they played in the last four at home, 2015, they went all the way to become champions.

Meveni is one of the players that may well prove the difference if that is to be repeated this year.
One person who is backing him is Cape Town City defender and Mozambican international Edmilson Dove who has been watching UWC home games awarded ‘Sporo’ his man of the match accolades.
“I enjoy watching the young man who wears number 21 play, he has the qualities to be a top player,” Dove believes.
The Stanton Smith-led side, started off the campaign on a bad note after losing to Kovsies and Tuks respectively, but have found their rhythm at the right time and now are on a bring of making a semi-final again. Can they overcome NWU at the ‘Operation Room’?
