Maties and Kovsies will square off in the Varsity Sevens Final for the second consecutive time after seeing off UJ and UP-Tuks in their semifinals.
The two teams met in the Final in Margate last year, and will do it all again in the decider at Camps Bay, whilst local favourites UWC will face NWU-Pukke in the Plate Final.
Defending champions Maties left it until the last minute to secure their spot in the final, with late tries from Kyle Leibrandt and skipper Rob Ahlers sealing a 20-7 win over UJ.
The Johannesburg side gave Maties a real scare as they camped on their tryline with a 7-5 lead and just minutes left to play, but Maties’ class showed through in the end thanks to the heroics of Leibrandt and Ahlers.
The second Cup semifinal between Tuks and Kovsies was more one-sided as Kovsies secured a comfortable 17-0 victory.
A try between the poles just before half-time gave them a 7-0 advantage at the break, before a late powerplay try put the seal on a convincing performance.
Local side UWC booked their spot in the Plate Final with a second consecutive victory over the NMMU Madibaz.
Although the team from Bellville held a narrow lead at half-time, the Madibaz came back in the second half to take a 14-12 advantage at one stage, however UWC’s class showed through in the end as they score a few late tries to make the game safe.
They will face Pukke, who ended UCT’s hopes with a comfortable 29-5 victory. The Ikeys have had a tough time of it in Camps Bay this weekend, and although they pushed hard until the final whistle they were no match for a strong Pukke outfit.
