Maties pulled off a shock 51-42 victory over NMMU which saw the Stellenbosch ladies pick up their first win of the competition while handing their opponents their first loss.
It was a fierce contest played at a high intensity in the first quarter with neither side giving an inch as they attempted to stamp their dominance in the match which saw NMMU take a slender 10-8 lead at the break.
Maties found some rhythm in the second quarter and took advantage of the powerplay which saw them take a 28-20 lead at the halftime break despite a valiant attacking effort by NMMU.
The Stellenbosch ladies stamped their dominance in the third quarter as they took advantage of NMMU’s missed chances to take an 11 point lead into the final quarter.
NMMU put in a valiant effort in the final quarter to try and reduce the deficit but were unable to overturn the lead as Maties held on to claim a narrow 51-42 bonus point victory.
