Defending champions Maties moved to the top of the Varsity Sevens standings with a 19-5 victory over UP-Tuks in Camps Bay on Saturday.
The win saw Maties move three log points clear of their rivals from Pretoria, whilst local side UWC climbed up to third place with a comprehensive 49-0 victory over Limpopo.
Josh Bassingthwaighte grabbed a double for Maties as they raced to a 19-0 lead at half-time, and although Tuks struck back with a try of their own from Clayton Stewart it was too little too late.
UWC made it three wins on the trot with their demolition of Limpopo to move into third place, just one log point ahead of UJ and Kovsies who are both still very much in the running for a spot in the Cup quarterfinals on Sunday.
Kovsies secured a crucial 20-10 victory against Pukke which moved them up to fifth place on the log, level with fourth-placed UJ who beat TUT 55-31.
The teams had been level at 5-5 at half-time, but a powerplay try from replacement AJ Koertzen saw Kovsies clinch what is a very valuable win.
The defeat sees Pukke move down into sixth place and in need of a strong finish if they are to challenge for a place in the Cup on Sunday.
UCT bounced back from consecutive defeats earlier on Saturday to beat the NMMU Madibaz 36-28 in a hard-fought encounter.
Varsity Sevens results:
Pukke 10-20 Kovsies
NMMU 28-36 UCT
Maties 19-5 Tuks
UJ 55-31 TUT
