Maties will face NWU-Pukke in the final of the Varsity Sports Sevens after securing a dramatic late 19-17 victory over UP-Tuks on Saturday.
The two powerhouses were evenly matched and traded blows on a regular basis, but a late try from Maties drew the scores level at 17-17 and the conversion snuck over to maintain the Stellenbosch side’s unbeaten status in the tournament.
Earlier NWU-Pukke sealed their spot in the final with a comprehensive 36-7 victory over a weary UJ team who battled to front up following a draining 17-17 draw with the NMMU Madibaz earlier in the day.
It was the Madibaz’s second draw of the day after the team from the Eastern Cape had held UP-Tuks to a 22-22 draw earlier in the day, and they scored with the last movement of the match to do the same against UJ.
The final clash in the Cup competition before the final saw UWC and NMMU square off, and after a scrappy first half the Madibaz started to impose themselves on the game to eventually claim a comfortable 17-5 victory.
Varsity Sports Sevens Cup results:
NMMU 17-17 UJ
NWU-Pukke 36-7 UJ
