Maties handed UJ a 3-2 Varsity Hockey defeat in Johannesburg on Monday, with the hosts fighting back well to earn a bonus point.
The visitors took the game to a UJ from the start and it did not take long for Farah Fredericks to get the first shot on goal, with her backstick effort flying just wide.
UJ, who were missing captain Bernadette Coston looked to respond, but Maties absorbed the pressure well and Ilse Davids was on hand to open the scoring by knocking in a loose ball from a penalty corner.
UJ did their level best to play some hockey in Maties territory, but could not build enough momentum to break the staunch defensive system down.
Maties continued to press hard, and they were rewarded when a square ball was deflected into the goal by a UJ defender to give the Stellenbosch side the 2-0 advantage they enjoyed at the first break.
Maties continued their onslaught in the second chukka as UJ struggled to break out of their own half.
Maties were dominating possession and drew an impressive triple save from UJ goalkeeper Robyn Ormond as they looked to add to their tally but the UJ defence held firm to keep them scoreless in the second period.
However, Maties were able to extend their lead at the start of the third chukka when a speedy counter-attack saw the ball worked out to Davids who buried her second goal to put her team firmly in control.
This gave Maties 15 minutes to find a fourth goal which would secure them a valuable bonus point. However, the UJ defence, which had plenty of work to do throughout the match, managed to hold on and deny them.
UJ created a few opportunities of their own towards the end of the match, and two late goals saw them take a deserved bonus point from the encounter.
A penalty stroke from Louise Coertzen got the home team off the mark, and they followed that up with a goal in the final seconds
