NMMU-Madibaz are on track to achieving their goal after a fairly good start to their Varsity Hockey campaign in Potchefstroom.
The Port Elizabeth ladies find themselves in sixth position following a solitary win and draw from their four matches and are hoping to maintain that position – which will help them improve on their seventh place finish in 2013.
The Madibaz’ Lauren Jasson knows they will have to tighten up defensively if they are to achieve success in the next round of the competition in Johannesburg.
“We were hoping to get a little bit more out of the weekend in Potchefstroom but overall we are content with the results. We now know exactly what we need to work on for the next round in Johannesburg.
“It was always going to be a tough weekend for us because we have a very young and inexperienced squad but the girls learnt a lot from the weekend, so it will do us more good than harm as we look to move forward.
“Our aim was always to improve on our seventh place finish in 2013 and we feel like we are on track to achieving that goal,” she told varsitysportssa.com.
Jasson admits the team was a little nervous when they played their first live TV game as it was something the girls had never experienced before.
“It was the first time most of us played on live TV, so we were really nervous before the game and I think that showed in our performance but those nerves settled in the second TV game and we gave a better account of ourselves.
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us but we are definitely heading in the right direction. Being in Potchefstroom and involved in Varsity Hockey is a great experience and to play in front of so many supporters is something special,” she added.
