UFS Kovsies recorded their third straight win in Varsity Netball when they thrashed UCT 91-19 in Bloemfontein on Monday.
It was one way traffic from the first whistle with the home side racking up the bonus point midway through the third quarter.
Kovsies got off to a flying start and were 6-0 up after the first five minutes. Kovsies captain Karla Mostert and Maryke Coetzee also made UCT work for very opportunity they had.
UCT struggled to capitalise on their minimal opportunities throughout the quarter with Kovsies continuing to add to their tally with ease. The Cape side eventually got on the board but by the end of the quarter the score was 20-3 in favour of the home side.
It was more of the same in the second quarter with the defending champions getting through the UCT defence with ease. Kovsies managed to add another 19 points, while UCT just managed to add another two. At half-time the score read 39-5 in favour of the home side.
Kovsies were off to a great start immediately after the break and raced to a 43-5 lead within the first few minutes. A powerplay was then called for, which proved disastrous for UCT as Kovsies bagged the bonus point for reaching 50 points with just a couple of more scores.
UCT continued working hard to try and find a way past the Kovsies’ defence, but were thwarted on many occasions.
The Cape side did manage to add another five points, but it paled in comparison to the amount of points Kovsies scored in the same period. By the end of the third quarter the score read 67-10.
A powerplay was called for early in the fourth quarter and both teams took advantage of the two-point rule to rack up the points. By the end of the powerplay and will 11 minutes left Kovsies led 77-15
With six minutes left and with the score reading 82-18, the thought on everybody’s mind was how much points Kovsies would get. They eventually went over the 90-point mark in what was a convincing win
