UFS-Kovsies scored a goal in each half to secure a 2-1 Varsity Football victory over UWC in Bellville.
It was the second straight win for the Free State team who beat Limpopo at home last week, whilst it was the second consecutive defeat for UWC who have just one log point from their three games this season.
Kovsies took the game to their hosts in the early stages, but UWC produced the first chance on goal through a counter attack.
The Bloemfontein team’s first opportunity came from a corner, but UWC goalkeeper Reon October was equal to the task as he produced a fine save from a powerful volley.
Kovsies kept the pressure on but it would be UWC that took the lead as their captain Curtley Beukes scrambled the ball over the line from close range.
Kovsies striker Dylan O’Brien had a great opportunity to equalise soon afterwards, but he could not hit the target under pressure from October.
They were finally rewarded for their dominance when a poor clearance from a corner gave Dumisani Tjomelane the chance to unleash a thunderbolt volley that flew into the top left corner to make it 1-1.
That was how it stayed until half-time as both teams battled to make the most of their chances in the tough conditions.
Beukes had a chance to give his side the lead early in the second half, but put his effort wide and Kovsies made them pay when Manxubandile Bantshi put them 2-1 up with a header from a corner.
With time running out the home side threw everything at Kovsies on attack as they searched for a late goal, but it was not to be as the visitors took all three points on offer.
