Kovsies have added a few promising talents to the core of the side that won the Varsity Sevens in Margate last year for the Camps Bay tournament next week.
The Bloemfontein side will once again be coached by Free State Under-19 and Shimlas Varsity Young Guns coach Andre Tredoux, and he has retained most of the players that featured in the Margate victory last year whilst adding a few new faces.
He told varsitysportssa.com: “We have got eight players back from last year, so it is great to have that continuity, but we also have a few new guys which makes it exciting.
“There was a lot of interest after last year, and we have got a few Shimlas Varsity Cup players in the squad along with some guys I picked up from the Koshuis league,” he explained.
The squad has been training together since early October and recently won a local Sevens tournament – beating the Free State side that went to the national interprovincial tournament in the final.
Tredoux is confident that with the good blend of youth and experience at his disposal his team will be stronger than they were last year, but he knows they will face some fierce competition in Camps Bay.
“The boys are fresh and we want to go out and enjoy Camps Bay, but everyone will be better prepared so it will be a serious challenge,” he said.
In terms of sizing up the opposition Tredoux singled out NWU-Pukke, Maties and UJ as the teams to look out for.
“Pukke have just won the national Sevens and Maties are the reigning champions and they are always a good side. UJ might be the ‘undercover’ side as they have quite a few Lions players and apparently UWC are quite strong as well,” he said.
