Kovsies defeated Madibaz by five wickets on Tuesday afternoon at the Ibbies Oval in their Varsity Cricket clash.
Madibaz won the toss and elected to bat. Mathew Christenson started with a bang, hitting a six from the first ball, however his lifeline was cut short when he was caught LBW by Marno van Greuning.
Michael Hansel (12) and Lloyd Brown (45) both were looking to rip the Bloemfontein boys’ bowling apart, but Kovsies claimed crucial wickets at crucial times. Brown would have been particularly upset with himself, getting stumped at a time he was looking in control.
After Brown’s departure Tian Koekemoer (18) and Solo Ngweni (17) attempted to steer the Madibaz innings to an acceptable score, but the boys from Bloemfontein had other plans in mind. Van Greuning and Ruan Janse van Rensburg both got two wickets, but it was Sean Whitehead who claimed two scalps, only conceding 16 runs in his four overs, which was the pick of the lot.
Madibaz ended on 142/9 in their 20 overs.
Kovsies’ batting started catastrophically when Wihan Victor lost his wicket in the very first over.
Arno Bouwer (24) and Jacobus Dreyer (36) secured the win in the middle order with effective running between the wickets. On more than one occasion they forced two runs, which under normal circumstances would only have been a single
After Bouwer and Dreyers departed, Van Greuning (17*) and Sean Whitehead (23*) put on a 52-run partnership to secure a crucial win for the chaps from Bloemfontein.
This win will keep their hopes alive to achieve Varsity Cricket glory in 2017.
