Defending Varsity Netball champions Kovsies handed UP-Tuks their first defeat of the season with a clinical display in Pretoria on Monday.
The bonus-point victory sees the two-time champions move to the top of the standings, while UP-Tuks finished the night empty-handed without even a bonus point to show for their efforts.
It was a tense and highly competitive match from the outset, with neither team willing to give an inch and matching each other point for point.
The visitors finished the opening quarter strongest and took a slender 15-13 lead into the first break.
Kovsies made a strong start to the second quarter and managed to put a little daylight between themselves and the hosts who were working hard to stay in touch.
UP-Tuks came back strong and managed to fight their way back onto level terms before long with some clinical netball, but Kovsies turned on the class and by half-time they had built up a 28-22 lead.
The home side made a determined start to the second half and managed to reduce the deficit to just two points as Kovsies did their best to absorb the pressure.
The first powerplay was taken with just three minutes left in the third quarter, and it was Kovsies who made best use of it to take a narrow 37-35 lead into the final break.
The seesaw nature of the match continued in the final quarter, leaving the match hanging in the balance heading into the final stages.
Kovsies imposed themselves as the match headed towards its conclusion and wrapped up the bonus point with three minutes left to close out a 55-41 victory.
