Kovsies are out to build momentum for the semifinals when they take on NMMU in their final group game of the Varsity Netball tournament on Sunday in Stellenbosch.
The team from the University of the Free State has already cemented it’s place in Monday’s semifinals and will be out to gain valuable momentum with their eye on varsity Netball’s biggest prize.
“We are in the semifinals, but the important thing now is to gain momentum and build on what we’ve achieved thus far. We want to play in the final and of course we want to win it. So we are taking the NMMU game very seriously,” Kovsies coach Burta de Kock said.
Chances are good that Kovsies will meet NMMU in the semifinals as well, depending on bonus point scenarios and therefore De Kock and her side won’t mind a victory on Sunday.
“It will not only give us a mental edge if we beat NMMU, but will also give the girls a very good idea what to expect if we meet them in the semifinals. It will also relieve some pressure,” the coach added.
Kovsies will not only have to endure two days of netball – the semifinals are played on Monday at the same venue – but will also have to do so without their Proteas players Maryka Holtzhausen, Karla Mostert and Adéle Niemand, who have all been called up to national duty for the coming triangular series against England and Trinidad and Tobago.
“We are confident that the rest of our players will shine in the absence of our national stalwarts. We expect a toug weekend of netball, but the girls fitness are up there with the best,” De Kock concluded.
