Kovsies’ national Under-23 800m champion Rynhardt van Rensburg is aiming to run under 1.46 minutes in Stellenbosch on Monday.
Van Rensburg has won the national U23 title for three consecutive years, and he is keen to add a Varsity Athletics feather to his cap as well.
However, he knows he is in for a real test with Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos in the field.
“I’m running against 2012 Olympic 800m silver medallist Nijel Amos from NWU, so it won’t be easy to win, but, nothing is impossible.
“I would love to break my pb of 1min46.36. I’ll try dip under 1.46,” he said.
Van Rensburg said that his short term goal is to qualify for the final of the African championship.
“I want to make the finals at African champs and I would like to dip under 1min46sec. Athletics is not an easy sport, and I had a passion since I was small, so nothing will ever stop me,” he said.
The Kovsies runner was full of priase for Varsity Athletics and the exposure it gives athletes.
“The meets are very good for the exposure of the sport; it’ll get a lot of people back to watching the sport and supporting it.
“It will also keep the athletes motivated and will keep them working hard. The vibe at these meets are great and people like to go and watch it,” he said.
