Coach, Godfrey Tenoff, says he loves coaching Varsity Football and wants to stay with UFS-Kovsies until he develops a style of own.
The inspirational coach steered his side to the 2013 Varsity Football finals where they lost to UP-Tuks and this season he is keen to go all the way.
Kovsies are one of three teams on 10 points in the top five vying for a spot in the semi-finals. UJ and NWU have already booked their place in the knock-out stage of the tournament.
Tenoff recently left the country to help coach SA’s intellectually impaired national side at the World Cup in Brazil, where they achieved a phenomenal silver medal placing, losing to champions Saudi Arabia.
“It went wonderfully and they did so well there. What many people don’t realise is that these players are not severely impaired. It just take a bit longer for them to grasp certain concepts and so coaching them requires lots of patience,” he said.
The former professional player plied his trade in the US, where he played for a number of clubs until 2009.
At 35 years of age, Tenoff had achieved all his coaching credentials and decided to join UFS when the opportunity arose.
“I love it here. It’s a great opportunity to work with future stars and to play a role in their lives. Coaching at level also allows us to involve other coaches at local level and also pro level, so it’s quite interesting and lots of lasting relationships are forged,” he said.
When asked if he sees himself leaving Varsity Football to coach professional teams, Tenoff replied: “I don’t see myself leaving here any time soon. I want to coach at this level for as long as I can. I want to develop my own style before I move on. I see myself doing this for at least seven to eight years.”
The Kovsies man at the helm refused to give away any his tactics for what promises to be a mouth-watering clash against NWU on Monday.
